Savannah (Ga.) Christian School five-star wide receiver Demetris Robertson’s recruitment was always good for one final twist.

It came Sunday in the form of an upside down painting.

Robertson gave a verbal commitment to play for California picking the Golden Bears over Notre Dame and Georgia at a ceremony in front of family and friends inside the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta.

While Cal managed to get Robertson on campus for an official visit back in October, the Golden Bears were never given much of a chance by many in the recruiting industry to land the nation's No. 8 overall prospect. The 6-0, 180-pound wideout, who has drawn comparisons to the likes of Will Fuller and Sammy Watkins, went the entire week of the U.S. Army All-American Game without mentioning Cal once to the media.

He then took official visits to both Georgia and Alabama and spent hours on the phone with the coaches at Notre Dame. But in the end it was Cal's package both on and off the field that sold Robertson on Berkley.

"They take care of their players," Robertson told UGASports.com's Jake Reuse. "The coaching staff is a really good support system when it comes to getting my degree. Also, stepping on the field, I know I can play anywhere. They have a great offense and defense, so I can play both."

Robertson was certainly a top target for Notre Dame and one that the coaching staff thought might have a chance to play early in his career, but not all is lost at wide receiver heading in to next season. The Irish got a productive spring out of early enrollee Kevin Stepherson, who has also started to draw his own comparisons to Fuller, and are welcoming the additions of Javon McKinley and Chase Claypool to the roster in June.
