Sophomore Mykelti Williams is no longer part of the Notre Dame program, head coach Brian Kelly said Wednesday after the safety was not at the practice that morning.

Kelly said he could not provide specifics on the situation.

Williams redshirted during the 2015 season, his first with the program. Rivals.com ranked him as a four-star recruit out of Warren Central High School in Indianapolis.

Without Williams, Notre Dame is down to nine safeties on its projected fall roster and will carry seven through the rest of spring ball. Senior Max Redfield brings 23 starts of experience to the unit with junior Drue Tranquill and sixth-year senior Avery Sebastian expected to carry the load next to him. Both, however, have missed significant portions of their careers due to injury.

Early enrollee Devin Studstill has already impacted the Irish defense in his first weeks on campus and enhances the Irish depth there.

“He’s running with our first group right now,” Kelly said. “He’s been really good. We’ve been very pleased with what he’s been doing and very happy with the way he’s picked up our defense. Excellent ball skills, excellent retention.

“He’s been probably the guy that’s done the most back there.”

Redfield praised Studstill and fellow early enrollee Spencer Perry on Friday.

“They’re both fast learners,” Redfield said. “Really eager to learn and get out there, and obviously that’s exactly what you want. And they’re athletic and our players are looking for them to contribute early, so we’re trying to get them as much information as we can and get them those reps to make them more comfortable in their system.”
