Pair of Irish players selected in 2016 MLB Draft

Two Notre Dame baseball players heard their name called in the 2016 Major League Baseball draft over the weekend.

First, junior second baseman Cavan Biggio was scooped up by the Toronto Blue Jays in the fifth round, while junior outfielder Torii Hunter Jr. went to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in the 23rd round.

Biggio's older brother, fellow Notre Dame product and 2015 Houston Astros draft pick, Conor Biggio, announced the Blue Jays' selection.

"That was definitely a surprise," Cavan Biggio told MLB.com. "I know he's been working with the draft all week and being in the room the past two days, but I honestly didn't really know what specifically he was doing. After my name was selected and I heard my name called, I said, 'That voice kind of sounds a little familiar. Sounds like my older brother, Conor.' It's kind of cool. ... it was cool he was a part of it."

According to MLB.com, Biggio agreed to a slot value bonus of $300,000.

This spring, Biggio served as the Irish leadoff hitter, starting all 54 games at second base. He finished with a .311 average and .473 on-base percentage with 61 hits, 12 doubles, four home runs and 28 RBI.

On Saturday, Hunter, a two-sport athlete, went to the Angels 18 rounds later. His father, Torii Hunter Sr., played for the organization from 2008-12. Like Biggio, he heard a family member — his father — announce the selection. Hunter was also selected in the 36th round by the Detroit Tigers in 2013 when his father was a member of that club.

Hunter played in 19 games this past spring with two hits, one RBI and seven runs. He is the likely No. 1 wide receiver for the football team this fall with the departure of Will Fuller. Hunter caught 28 passes for 363 yards and two touchdowns in 2015.
