John and Kim Callaghan have donated $3 million to endow Notre Dame's men's tennis head coaching position, the school announced on Monday.

According to the release, the gift will provide stability and resources for the long term and create funds for use within the department.

“In light of its long-term impact, there is no greater gift to an athletic program than the one that the Callaghans have made by their extraordinarily generous decision to endow the head coach of our men’s tennis program,” athletics director Jack Swarbrick said in the release. “Generations of future tennis players at Notre Dame will be indebted to them.”

Dr. John Callaghan is a 1976 graduate of Notre Dame, and the couple's two children also attended the school. Patrick Callaghan was a four-year monogram winner for the men's tennis team, earning his bachelor's degree in economics and political science in 2010. Katie graduated in 2012 with a double major in theology and preprofessional studies (pre-med).

The endowment makes Ryan Sachire, in his third year as head coach at Notre Dame, the first Callaghan Family Head Men's Tennis Coach.

“Any gift of this magnitude to the University is incredibly special, but the personal connection with John and Kim’s son Patrick, being a relatively recent men’s tennis student-athlete, makes this particular gesture unique and humbling,” Sachire said in the release. “I can’t thank them enough for this gift to our program, as it will continue to ensure that future members of the men’s tennis team will have the opportunity to pursue excellence on the court and in the classroom, and ultimately develop into tremendous leaders during their time at Notre Dame.”

Notre Dame announced a $5 million endowment for the women’s basketball program in February 2015, a gift that was donated by Karen and Kevin Keyes, and a similar $5 million endowment from Glenn and Stacey Murphy for the men's basketball program this March.

In May 2015, the men’s lacrosse head coach position was endowed for $3 million by John and Mollie Baumer. And in June 2015, Richard Corbett endowed the head football coaching position for $35 million, which was a gift that also went towards academic buildings.
